Useful vocabulary: Talking about the environment in English
We all know that one of today’s hot topics is climate change. We have heard about environmental issues and sustainability. However, these issues are challenging to discuss in a second language. So, let’s consider some of the vocabulary you will need to be able to contribute meaningfully to discussions on these topics.
Firstly, there is near universal scientific consensus that emissions of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, have contributed to climate change. Damage has been caused to the ozone layer, allowing more harmful UV radiation to make its way to Planet Earth.
Another buzzword is sustainability. Whatever sector or industry you are involved with, questions of sustainability will arise. Carbon offset schemes have been developed to deal with some of the effects of carbon dioxide emissions.
If you’re preparing for an exam, be prepared to be able to discuss environmental issues. These topics could be raised in the speaking or writing sections of an exam. Likewise in the listening or reading sections, you may receive an input that deals with the environment. Be prepared to explain how your town or city could respond to environmental challenges. You may want to discuss rubbish reduction, recycling, increased use of public transport, cycleways, pedestrianised areas, and electric and hybrid vehicles.
If you are really up for a challenge, you could consider such things as the most efficient forms of food production and agricultural practices generally. The generation of electricity is another topic which is often mentioned in the context of reducing environmental impacts. Be aware of how electricity is generated in your country and what changes are feasible to improve matters. What could be done to reduce energy use?
As with any area of vocabulary development, reading is an excellent way to expand your active and passive vocabulary. Greenpeace is a source of a wide range of articles on the environment.
